Starting in the middle of March, lake treatment will begin across all five lakes in Deer Valley, with a total of five treatments planned throughout the year. These treatments are designed to help prevent the growth of algae and maintain the health of the lakes. Algal blooms can negatively affect water quality, making it crucial to address them before they become a problem.
Algal blooms occur when algae in a body of water grow rapidly due to an overabundance of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrients typically come from sources like fertilizers, runoff from yards, or wastewater. While algae are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, when they multiply excessively, they can disrupt the balance of the environment and cause problems for both the ecosystem and people who use the water.
When an algal bloom happens, the water may change color, often turning green, blue, or even red. These blooms can lead to lower oxygen levels in the water, which harms fish and other aquatic life. In some cases, certain types of algae can release toxins that are harmful to humans, pets, and wildlife. These toxins can cause skin rashes, respiratory issues, and more severe health problems if contact is made with the water.
The lake treatments scheduled throughout the year will help reduce the excess nutrients that contribute to algal blooms and promote a healthier aquatic environment. By preventing the growth of algae, these treatments will help keep the lakes clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone in the community.
