Annual Lake Treatment in Deer Valley: Preventing Algal Blooms and Promoting Water Quality https://deervalleyhoa.com/annual-lake-treatment-in-deer-valley-preventing-algal-blooms-and-promoting-water-quality/ https://deervalleyhoa.com/annual-lake-treatment-in-deer-valley-preventing-algal-blooms-and-promoting-water-quality/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 23:57:09 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2608 Starting in the middle of March, lake treatment will begin across all five lakes in Deer Valley, with a total of five treatments planned throughout the year. These treatments are designed to help prevent the growth of algae and maintain the health of the lakes. Algal blooms can negatively affect water quality, making it crucial to address them before they become a problem.

Algal blooms occur when algae in a body of water grow rapidly due to an overabundance of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. These nutrients typically come from sources like fertilizers, runoff from yards, or wastewater. While algae are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, when they multiply excessively, they can disrupt the balance of the environment and cause problems for both the ecosystem and people who use the water.

When an algal bloom happens, the water may change color, often turning green, blue, or even red. These blooms can lead to lower oxygen levels in the water, which harms fish and other aquatic life. In some cases, certain types of algae can release toxins that are harmful to humans, pets, and wildlife. These toxins can cause skin rashes, respiratory issues, and more severe health problems if contact is made with the water.

The lake treatments scheduled throughout the year will help reduce the excess nutrients that contribute to algal blooms and promote a healthier aquatic environment. By preventing the growth of algae, these treatments will help keep the lakes clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone in the community.

What the HOA Covenant Committee Means for Deer Valley Residents https://deervalleyhoa.com/what-the-hoa-covenant-committee-means-for-deer-valley-residents/ https://deervalleyhoa.com/what-the-hoa-covenant-committee-means-for-deer-valley-residents/#comments Wed, 12 Mar 2025 21:39:43 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2756 The HOA Covenant Committee plays an important role in maintaining the beauty and harmony of our neighborhood by ensuring everyone follows the community’s guidelines. These guidelines, known as CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions), have always been in place to protect property values and create a pleasant environment for all residents.

In Deer Valley, Justin Wink is leading the Covenant Committee, working to keep the neighborhood well-managed. Each section of the neighborhood will have one committee member assigned to help monitor and ensure that the rules are being followed. If there are any concerns or issues, these members will address them in a fair and consistent way.

A Violation Fine Schedule will be mailed to all Deer Valley residents. This will take effect immediately, and its purpose is to encourage everyone to stay in compliance with the community’s rules. By clearly outlining the consequences for violations, the goal is to help keep the neighborhood running smoothly and ensure everyone is doing their part.

It’s important to note that any structures built before Jagoe handed the neighborhood over to the board will be grandfathered in. These structures will not be subject to retroactive enforcement of the rules, ensuring fairness for properties that were established prior to the official handover.

The hope is that this new system will help maintain Deer Valley as a wonderful place to live. It encourages residents to follow the guidelines and ensures that everyone contributes to keeping the neighborhood clean, safe, and beautiful.

With the new fine schedule in place and committee members overseeing each section of the community, the Covenant Committee is working to keep Deer Valley an even better place for all to enjoy.

Before you build, submit your Architectural Review Application Form.

Streetlights on Cherry Blossom Court: Enhancing Safety and Community Well-Being https://deervalleyhoa.com/streetlights-on-cherry-blossom-court-enhancing-safety-and-community-well-being/ https://deervalleyhoa.com/streetlights-on-cherry-blossom-court-enhancing-safety-and-community-well-being/#comments Wed, 12 Mar 2025 21:24:54 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2753 Manuel (Jagoe’s VP of Land) and Caleb (Kenergy’s Field Engineer) visited Cherry Blossom Court with blueprints to inspect the streetlights and investigate why three of them had not been installed. They were able to locate one of the three missing conduits, and they believe the other two were likely damaged over time due to the installation of public utilities. They have contacted the utility locator and plan to install new conduit for the remaining two streetlights within the next few weeks. These lights will come at no additional cost to us, as they were originally part of the plan. Unfortunately, adding extra streetlights, such as those for The Loop, isn’t feasible due to the high costs involved.

Streetlight Safety

Streetlights play a crucial role in ensuring safety within neighborhoods, offering benefits such as crime prevention and improved traffic safety. Properly lit streets enhance visibility, reduce risks, and make both drivers and pedestrians feel secure.

Crime Prevention and Visibility

Well-lit streets help prevent criminal activity, as dark areas are more likely to be targeted for crime. A well-lit environment makes it easier to spot suspicious behavior and ensures that people feel safer walking or driving at night.

Traffic Safety

Streetlights improve traffic safety by making it easier for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to navigate at night. They help avoid accidents by clearly illuminating crosswalks, intersections, and road signs, ensuring visibility for everyone on the road.

Kids’ Safety While Playing at Night

Streetlights are also important for children who enjoy playing outdoors after dark. Well-lit streets allow kids to play outside safely, whether riding bikes or playing games, and help drivers spot them in time. Good lighting makes outdoor spaces more inviting and safer for children, ensuring that they can enjoy their time outside without the risks associated with dark areas.

Psychological Benefits

Beyond physical safety, streetlights provide psychological benefits. They create a sense of security, encouraging outdoor activities and fostering community interaction. Poorly lit areas can leave people feeling unsafe and isolated.

Maintenance and Reporting

To maintain safety, streetlights need to be properly maintained. Broken or malfunctioning lights can create dangerous dark spots. If you notice a streetlight is out, contact Kenergy at 270-926-4141 for repair. Timely maintenance helps keep neighborhoods safe and well-lit.

Community Involvement

Residents can also contribute to streetlight safety by reporting issues and advocating for additional lighting in underlit areas. Community involvement ensures that the neighborhood remains secure and welcoming for all.

Conclusion

Streetlight safety is essential for neighborhood security and well-being. By maintaining well-lit streets and ensuring timely repairs, neighborhoods can create a safer, more connected environment for everyone.

How To Prepare For Spring In March https://deervalleyhoa.com/how-to-prepare-for-spring-in-march/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 01:49:14 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2688 How to Prepare for Spring in March: A Guide for Kentucky Homeowners

As March rolls in, Kentucky begins to transition from the cold, crisp winter months to the mild and blossoming warmth of spring. For homeowners in the Bluegrass State, March is the perfect time to start preparing for the season of renewal. Spring in Kentucky is marked by unpredictable weather, from warm, sunny days to unexpected frosts and rain showers, so planning ahead is essential. Here’s a guide to help Kentucky residents prepare for spring in March, from home maintenance to outdoor activities.

1. Clean Up Your Yard and Garden

The first step in preparing for spring in Kentucky is tidying up your yard and garden to clear the debris that may have accumulated during the winter. Here’s how to get started:

  • Remove Leaves and Debris: Use a rake or leaf blower to clear fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris from your lawn, garden beds, and gutters. This will not only improve the appearance of your yard but also prevent mold or mildew growth.
  • Check for Weeds: March is a good time to address any early-season weeds that may have sprouted. Pull them up manually or use an appropriate herbicide to stop them from taking over your garden as the warmer weather sets in.
  • Prepare Flower and Vegetable Beds: If you’re planning to plant flowers or vegetables in the spring, now is the time to prepare your garden beds. Turn the soil, add compost or fertilizer, and ensure the soil drains properly.

2. Assess and Maintain Your Lawn

Kentucky’s climate, with its cold winters and humid summers, can take a toll on your lawn. March is an ideal month to start lawn care, setting the foundation for a lush green lawn through the spring and summer months.

  • Aerate the Lawn: If your lawn has heavy foot traffic or clay-like soil, aerating it can help improve root growth by allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the soil. A lawn aerator can be rented from a local hardware store if you don’t own one.
  • Fertilize Your Lawn: Kentucky lawns typically thrive in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Applying a fertilizer high in nitrogen in March can give your grass the nutrients it needs to grow strong and healthy.
  • Seed Bare Spots: March is also a great time to address any bare spots in your lawn by overseeding with a cool-season grass blend. Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass are popular choices for this climate.

3. Inspect Your Home’s Exterior

Before the first spring rains and warmer weather arrive, take the time to inspect your home’s exterior for damage that may have occurred during the winter months. Early March is a great time to tackle these tasks to avoid bigger issues later on.

  • Check for Roof Damage: Winter storms and snow can cause damage to your roof. Inspect shingles for any cracks, curling, or missing pieces. If you notice damage, consider calling a professional roofer for repairs to prevent leaks during spring rains.
  • Clean Your Gutters: Winter weather can fill your gutters with leaves, branches, and other debris. Clean out your gutters to ensure proper drainage and to prevent water from backing up into your home, causing potential water damage or flooding.
  • Inspect Windows and Doors: Check for gaps or leaks around windows and doors. This will help maintain energy efficiency as temperatures fluctuate during the early spring. Consider replacing weather stripping or caulking around windows to prevent drafts.

4. Spring Clean Your Home

While spring cleaning is a tradition for many homeowners, it’s also an essential part of preparing your home for the new season. March is the ideal month to tackle deep cleaning tasks and refresh your living space after the long winter.

  • Clean and Organize Closets: Take stock of your winter clothing and make space for lighter, warmer-weather attire. Donate items you no longer need and organize your closets to prepare for a more breathable wardrobe.
  • Wash Windows: Dust, dirt, and grime can accumulate on windows during the winter months. Clean both the interior and exterior of your windows to let in the bright spring sunlight.
  • Deep Clean Your Kitchen and Bathrooms: Spring is a great time to give your kitchen and bathrooms a deep clean. Wipe down surfaces, sanitize sinks, scrub grout lines, and clean out pantry shelves. Consider organizing your kitchen cabinets and drawers for better functionality.

5. Prepare Your HVAC System for Warmer Weather

As temperatures in Kentucky begin to rise, your HVAC system will need to shift from heating mode to cooling mode. Take the time in March to ensure your air conditioning system is ready for the warmer months.

  • Replace Air Filters: Dirty or clogged filters can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. Replace the filters in your furnace or air conditioning unit to keep your air quality high and your system running smoothly.
  • Schedule an HVAC Checkup: Consider hiring a professional HVAC technician to inspect your system, check for any issues, and perform necessary maintenance before the heat of summer arrives.

6. Start Planning for Outdoor Activities

Spring in Kentucky offers a variety of outdoor activities, from hiking in the Appalachian foothills to enjoying the famous Kentucky Derby celebrations. As the weather warms up, start planning for fun outdoor activities with family and friends.

  • Plan Your Garden and Landscaping: If you’re interested in growing flowers, vegetables, or herbs, March is the time to start planning. Consider starting seeds indoors or purchasing young plants from local nurseries to ensure your garden thrives.
  • Prepare for Gardening Tools: Clean and sharpen garden tools, such as shovels, rakes, and pruners, so you’re ready when it’s time to get outside. Don’t forget to check your irrigation systems to make sure everything is in working order for watering your garden.
  • Check Outdoor Furniture: If you have outdoor furniture, clean it off, check for any wear and tear, and ensure that it’s ready for use as the weather warms up. Consider washing cushions and treating the furniture with weather-resistant coatings.

7. Stay Prepared for Unexpected Cold Spells

Kentucky’s weather can be unpredictable in March, with occasional late-season cold snaps or frosts. Be prepared for these unexpected temperature swings by:

  • Protecting Plants: If you’ve already started planting, make sure to cover your tender plants with frost blankets or bring potted plants indoors if a cold snap is expected.
  • Have Extra Blankets and Heaters: Even though it’s spring, it’s wise to have extra blankets and portable heaters on hand in case temperatures dip unexpectedly.

Conclusion

March in Kentucky marks the start of the transition from winter to spring, and there’s no better time to prepare your home, yard, and life for the new season. From cleaning up your garden and lawn to inspecting your home’s exterior and refreshing your HVAC system, taking proactive steps in March can ensure a smooth and enjoyable spring. By staying ahead of the season’s changes, you’ll be able to make the most of Kentucky’s beautiful spring weather and create a comfortable, well-maintained space for you and your family to enjoy.

What To Know About Birds In Dryer Vents https://deervalleyhoa.com/what-to-know-about-birds-in-dryer-vents/ Sat, 01 Mar 2025 04:08:49 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2622 Why Birds in Dryer Vents are Dangerous, How to Remove Them, and How to Prevent Nests from Forming

Dryer vents are essential components of a home’s laundry system, expelling hot, moist air to keep the dryer running efficiently. However, they can also inadvertently become a cozy and unexpected home for birds. While this may seem harmless at first, having birds in your dryer vent can create a range of dangers that can jeopardize your home’s safety, as well as the well-being of the birds. Here’s why birds in dryer vents are dangerous, how to safely remove them, and how to prevent them from nesting in the future.

Why Birds in Dryer Vents are Dangerous

  1. Fire Hazard
The most significant danger posed by birds in dryer vents is the risk of fire. Dryer vents carry lint, which is highly flammable. If a bird builds a nest in the vent, it can clog the vent, causing the dryer to overheat. This blockage can also trap lint and other debris in the vent, increasing the chance of a fire starting due to poor airflow.
  2. Health Risks
Birds can carry diseases and parasites that pose a health risk to humans. Nesting materials, such as feathers and droppings, can harbor bacteria, mites, and other harmful pathogens. If these materials enter your home through the dryer vent or become airborne, they can trigger allergic reactions or even spread illnesses.
  3. Poor Airflow and Dryer Efficiency
A bird’s nest obstructs the vent, preventing proper airflow. This can lead to longer drying times, overheating of the dryer, and inefficient operation. In some cases, this may even cause the dryer to break down completely, leading to costly repairs or replacements.
  4. Damage to the Vent System
Bird nests can cause physical damage to the dryer vent system itself. As the birds come and go, they may inadvertently damage the vent’s ductwork or other components. In the worst case, this can lead to the vent becoming completely blocked, which might require expensive repairs or replacement.

How to Remove Birds from Dryer Vents

If you discover that birds have built a nest in your dryer vent, it’s essential to remove them quickly and safely. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:

  1. Check for Birds or Eggs
First, ensure that there are no birds or eggs inside the vent. Use a flashlight to inspect the vent from both the outside and the inside if possible. If you see birds or eggs, it’s best to wait until the birds have left the nest, as many bird species are protected by law, and removing eggs or young birds may be illegal without proper permits.
  2. Turn Off Your Dryer
Before taking any action, turn off your dryer and unplug it. You don’t want to run the risk of the dryer starting while you’re working on the vent.
  3. Remove the Nest
Once you’re certain that the birds have vacated, carefully remove the nest. Use gloves to avoid coming into contact with any potential pathogens or parasites. You can use a long, flexible tool or a vacuum with a hose attachment to pull the nest out of the vent.
  4. Inspect the Vent
After removing the nest, thoroughly inspect the vent for any debris or damage. Make sure the vent is clear, and check for any clogs that could obstruct airflow. If necessary, clean the vent to ensure proper function.
  5. Seal the Opening
Once the vent is clean, take steps to seal the opening from the outside to prevent birds from re-entering. Use a vent cover with a mesh or slatted design that prevents birds from entering but still allows air to flow freely.

How to Prevent Birds from Nesting in Dryer Vents

  1. Install a Vent Cover
A bird-proof vent cover is one of the most effective ways to prevent birds from entering your dryer vent. These covers typically feature a mesh screen or a slatted design that allows air to escape while preventing birds and other pests from getting inside. Be sure to check the cover regularly to ensure it’s in good condition and hasn’t been damaged or dislodged.
  2. Keep the Area Around the Vent Clear
Birds are often attracted to dryer vents because they provide a safe, secluded space for nesting. To discourage birds from building nests in your vent, keep the area around the vent clear of shrubs, trees, and other potential nesting sites. Trim any plants near the vent to reduce the risk of attracting birds.
  3. Use a Dryer Vent Flap or Louvered Vent
Installing a vent with a built-in flap or louvered design can also help prevent birds from nesting. These flaps open only when the dryer is running, allowing hot air to escape while blocking access for birds when the dryer is off.
  4. Regular Inspection
Regularly check your dryer vent to make sure it is free of nests, debris, or any damage. Perform routine maintenance, including cleaning the vent, to keep it functioning properly. If you spot any signs of birds or nesting materials, address the issue immediately.
  5. Consider Professional Help
If you’re not comfortable removing the nest or inspecting the vent yourself, consider hiring a professional pest control or wildlife removal service. They have the expertise and tools to handle the situation safely and humanely, especially when dealing with protected bird species.

Conclusion

While it may seem like an innocent situation, birds nesting in your dryer vent can be hazardous to both your home and your health. By understanding the risks involved, you can take proactive steps to prevent birds from nesting in your vent, remove any nests safely, and ensure your dryer continues to operate efficiently. Installing a proper vent cover and maintaining your dryer vent system can go a long way in preventing future bird intrusions and keeping your home safe.

Benefits Of HOA Events https://deervalleyhoa.com/benefits-of-hoa-events/ https://deervalleyhoa.com/benefits-of-hoa-events/#comments Thu, 16 Jan 2025 01:12:45 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2322 Why HOA Events Are Important: Building Stronger Communities Through Engagement

Homeowners Associations (HOAs) play a significant role in maintaining the quality of life and the aesthetic appeal of a community. While their primary responsibilities often focus on property maintenance, rule enforcement, and financial management, HOA events are equally important for fostering a strong, cohesive community. These events, whether social, educational, or celebratory, bring residents together, help build relationships, and enhance the overall living experience. Here’s why HOA events are so important for homeowners and communities as a whole.

1. Strengthening Community Bonds

One of the most important benefits of HOA events is their ability to bring neighbors together and foster a sense of community. Many neighborhoods, especially in larger developments, can feel impersonal and disconnected. Hosting events like block parties, holiday gatherings, or neighborhood cleanups gives residents a chance to interact with one another in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

These events help break down barriers and create a sense of camaraderie. As neighbors engage in casual conversations or collaborate on projects, they develop stronger relationships. This creates a more connected and supportive community where people are more likely to look out for each other and work together to address neighborhood issues.

2. Enhancing Communication and Transparency

HOA events also provide an excellent opportunity for the board to communicate directly with residents. Whether it’s a quarterly meeting or an informal social event, gatherings allow board members to address concerns, share updates, and discuss important community matters in person. This creates an environment of transparency where residents feel more informed and involved in decisions affecting their neighborhood.

For example, an HOA might host a town hall-style event where residents can ask questions, voice concerns, and learn about upcoming projects or changes in the community. This helps ensure that homeowners feel heard and valued, leading to greater trust and cooperation between the HOA board and residents.

3. Fostering a Positive and Welcoming Atmosphere

Events hosted by the HOA play an essential role in creating a positive and welcoming environment. Celebrating holidays, birthdays, or local milestones gives the community a shared purpose and an opportunity to showcase its diversity and inclusivity. When people are united by common interests or celebrations, they feel a deeper sense of belonging.

For instance, a neighborhood picnic, a 5k run, or a holiday lights contest can encourage participation from people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. It also shows that the HOA values its residents’ well-being and strives to make the community a fun and enjoyable place to live.

4. Encouraging Resident Participation and Volunteerism

HOA events often rely on volunteers, whether for organizing, setting up, or simply helping to run the event on the day. This fosters a culture of volunteerism and active participation within the community. Homeowners who volunteer their time and resources not only make the events more successful but also gain a deeper connection to the neighborhood.

Additionally, by participating in events, residents can gain a better understanding of the HOA’s goals and objectives. It also offers them the chance to contribute their ideas and feedback, making them feel more invested in the community’s success.

5. Improving Property Values

While HOA events may seem focused on social aspects, they can also have a positive impact on property values. A community that actively hosts events, maintains high levels of engagement, and fosters a sense of pride in its appearance and cohesion can be more attractive to potential buyers.

When prospective homeowners visit a neighborhood and see residents interacting at a community event or participating in well-maintained communal spaces, they are more likely to perceive the area as vibrant, active, and well-managed. This can increase demand for homes in the neighborhood and potentially raise property values over time.

6. Promoting Education and Awareness

HOA events aren’t just about socializing—they can also serve an educational purpose. Many HOAs organize events like workshops or seminars to inform residents about various aspects of homeownership, community regulations, or environmental responsibility. These events can cover a wide range of topics, from sustainability initiatives (e.g., composting, energy efficiency) to practical tips about home maintenance or even understanding HOA rules and regulations.

Education-focused events help ensure that residents are aware of their rights and responsibilities, and they encourage a proactive approach to community involvement. It also provides a platform for residents to learn about local resources, services, and opportunities that they might not otherwise know about.

7. Providing Recreational Opportunities

In addition to social and educational aspects, HOA events often offer recreational opportunities for residents. From fitness classes and sports leagues to art shows or talent nights, these events give homeowners a chance to unwind and engage in hobbies or activities they enjoy. Such events contribute to a healthy lifestyle by promoting physical activity, mental wellness, and creativity.

Having these opportunities right within the neighborhood makes it easier for residents to participate without the need to travel far or spend significant time and money. It also helps build a sense of pride in the community and promotes a culture of health and well-being.

8. Increasing Community Security

Strong communities are often safer communities. When residents know each other, they are more likely to look out for one another and take proactive steps to protect the neighborhood. HOA events help create these bonds and allow for the exchange of security-related information or concerns.

Events can also be an opportunity for the HOA to promote neighborhood watch programs, emergency preparedness plans, or safety tips. Having an engaged and vigilant community can deter criminal activity and increase the overall safety of the area.

9. Raising Funds for Community Projects

Some HOA events, such as auctions, garage sales, or charity fundraisers, serve a dual purpose: providing entertainment while raising money for important community initiatives. These funds can be used for projects like improving community amenities, landscaping, or upgrading neighborhood facilities. Residents feel more invested in such projects when they have a hand in contributing to them, whether through attendance or volunteering.

10. Celebrating the Neighborhood’s Unique Identity

Every neighborhood has its own character and charm. HOA events provide a platform to celebrate and promote this unique identity. Whether it’s through a local festival, a heritage event, or a fun competition, these events highlight the community’s strengths and values.

For example, hosting a local farmers’ market, a cultural fair, or a historical walking tour can highlight what makes the community special. Celebrating these aspects reinforces the connection residents have to their neighborhood and fosters pride in where they live.

Conclusion

HOA events are much more than just fun gatherings—they are vital to the health and vitality of a community. They create opportunities for residents to connect, communicate, and collaborate while building a sense of belonging. By fostering engagement, encouraging volunteerism, enhancing property values, and promoting education, HOA events play a key role in creating a harmonious and thriving neighborhood. When residents are actively involved, they are more likely to invest in their community, ensuring its continued success and well-being.

5 Tips When Winterizing Your Home https://deervalleyhoa.com/5-tips-when-winterizing-your-home/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 02:31:31 +0000 https://deervalleyhoa.com/?p=2145 The cold weather is here and it’s only going to get colder. Here are a few helpful tips to prepare your home for winter.

Protect Your Pipes

Your pipes are at risk of freezing any time temperatures drop below 32°F. However, it’s much more common for pipes to freeze when temperatures dip below 20°F. The longer the weather remains below freezing, the more likely it is your pipes can freeze if not properly protected and winterized. In these temperatures, the water inside your pipes can expand, causing pressure that leads to ruptures.

There are several ways to help prevent your pipes from bursting:

  • Cover exposed pipes outside with a pool noodle or a towel.
  • Let your inside faucets drip with warm water.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes under the sinks.
  • Disconnect hoses, inspect the faucets for leaks, seal any gaps, drain spigots & pipes, and add outdoor faucet covers.
  • If the water heater is in the garage, use a safe heating method like a space heater to keep it warm but never use an open flame.

Not following these steps could cause severe damage to the foundation of your home.

Avoid Ice Melt

Pouring a bag of salt sounds like a quick and easy way to clear your driveway but it could cause you more problems. Rock salt is not only poisonous for your pets and plants but also highly corrosive. Its harmful chlorides cause health risks to children and pets—salt damages concrete driveways, patios, and sidewalks indirectly. Salt corrodes concrete beneath the surface, resulting in discolored, cracked, and crumbling concrete. It is caused mainly by chemicals reacting with the pavement surface. It’s also a good idea to have your vehicle washed after driving on treated roads and parking lots.

Get Your Furnace Serviced

You don’t want to find out your heating system is dead right when you need it. It’s a lot easier for a plumber or HVAC expert to work on your system in the fall than in the winter. Change your filters and test your heating in advance to ensure your furnace and thermostats are working appropriately. Look around your water heater for any signs of leaks or moisture, and take care of any minor issues before they become full-scale problems. If you’re having HVAC problems, we highly recommend our neighbor Noah Schwartz with New Age Heating & Cooling to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Preparing your home for winter can be as easy as flipping a switch. Reversing your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise during winter can be a simple yet effective way to save up to 10 percent on your heating costs. This change creates an updraft that circulates warm air near the ceiling down into the living space, helping to distribute heat more evenly. This improved circulation allows you to set your thermostat at a lower temperature while still feeling warm, thereby saving money and energy.

Stay Prepared

Ice storms can cause power outages. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Be sure to have several flashlights with extra batteries.
  • Keep your fridge and freezer doors closed to protect the contents.
  • Have some food and drinks available that do not require electricity to heat or prepare it.
  • Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home.
